Nestled in the historical landscape overlooking Lake Bolsena, the Beacon via Francigena emerges as a serene and monumental testament to architectural finesse. Its foundations lie on the hallowed grounds of the S. Giovanni Chapel (1587), transforming this historical site into a contemporary anchor point along the Via Francigena. With panoramic views of Lake Bolsena, the Beacon not only preserves its ritual significance but also extends a welcoming space for pilgrims and travelers, fostering social interaction and contemplation of the region’s rich history.

The design ethos embraces historical context while pursuing monumentality. Atop the existing chapel, a monolithic and elegant octagonal addition rises, featuring a modern interpretation of a historical roof. This addition houses a gallery, library, and an open auditorium, promoting a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. A new annex massing on the east side, replacing the previous crippled roof, connects seamlessly to a pilgrim’s accommodation, communal kitchen, dining hall, and a programed terrace via a graceful staircase.

Externally, the Beacon’s façade, clad in backlight concave marble panels with a refined monochromatic texture, transforms into a numinous beacon when gently illuminated at night, visible from afar. The golden ratio guides the reconstruction of the historical roof geometry, fostering a visual dialogue with the existing structure and employing shimmering textures inspired by lake ripples. A pathway to the roof, nestled between the exterior wall and interior dome, unfolds a sensory journey enriched by galleries, archives, and books, culminating in an open auditorium with breathtaking views of Lake Bolsena.

Materiality is a subtle spectacle, with muted volumes at a distance giving way to intricate tectonic richness upon closer inspection. The titanium zinc alloy enhances the crisp reading of the marble panels, delicately delineating the boundary between old and new. The Beacon, with its elegant design and vibrant programs, transcends the role of S. Giovanni’s church, becoming a new nexus for pilgrims, travelers, and the community of San Lorenzo Nuovo. Beyond being a mere beacon on the Via Francigena, this renovation illuminates the historical territory of S. Lorenzo, breathing new life into its storied past.
